:: Domain Name Transfers
What do I need to know before I start a transfer to Dotology?
Although transferring your domain name is a fairly straightforward process, there are a few things you will need to check before you start.
- The admin contact: The confirmation e-mail will be sent to the admin contact on file for the domain when the transfer is initiated. Make sure the admin contact is an address that you have access to. If your domain is using a privacy service with your current provider, you may need to contact the current registrar to remove domain privacy first.
- The domain’s eligibility: Domains can only be transferred if they have been registered for at least 60 days. Many registrars prohibit expired domain names from being transferred. We recommend that you start the domain name transfer process at least 10 days prior to the expiration. If you have renewed the domain name after it has expired, you may need to wait 45 days before the domain name can be transferred
- The domain status: The domain name must be in unlocked status for it to be eligible to transfer. Most registrars’ default is locked. Please contact the losing registrar for instructions on unlocking the domain name.
- The auth code: The auth code is a code that signifies to the registry that the owner of the domain name approves the transfer. You can get the auth code from the losing registrar.
Once you have verified that the domain is eligible for transfer, is unlocked and that the auth code is correct, you can start the transfer process.
